of sea and stone
In 2018 I began a long-term project researching and writing my family’s history. My ancestry is largely Azorean — a fascinating group of islands in the great Atlantic. Though there are nearly a million Açorianos in the world, only a quarter of them live in their homeland. My hope through this work is to connect the diaspora to its beautiful land and history, and to inspire people from any place to dig into their own past as a answer to personal questions around disconnection, health, and fulfillment.
Here you’ll find primary sources, photos, and essays I’ve written on the topic.
Below is a collection of photos I took while in my great-grandmother’s village and the forest that sits above it. All photos were taken on 35mm with a Leica M4 on Pico Island, Açores, November 2019.
